Goose Fest 2012

June 17, 2012 in Golden Colorado

My friend Jim Marski and I headed out to Golden Colorado and the Colorado Railroad Museum. It was Fathers day but to rail fans it was Goose Fest. This was the first time since the shutdown of the Rio Grande Southern Railroad that 6 of the 7 Galloping Geese were back together running in Colorado.

Most of the museum is outdoors and at 1 pm it was a dry 97 degrees. Admission was $15 but included unlimited rides on the larger Geese. Jim and I waited about 20 minutes to ride Goose #4. While we were waiting a replica of Goose #1 and # 6 were parked nearby. #1 had overheated while #6 was ready to go.

Goose #6 has a Buick body and is owned and restored to operating condition by the CO RR Museum. The real #1 was scrapped in the 1930s. Parts from #1 were used to build #6. Goose #1 shown here is a replica built for the Ridgeway Railroad Museum

We were able to get in the cab of Goose 4 which was a bus body with standard school bus type folding doors on both sides. The ride was surprisingly smooth on the well maintained museum loop. Goose 4 is owned by the Rideway  Railroad Museum Ridgeway CO and was recently restored to operational condition. She was on loan  for the weekend shipped from Ridgeway to Golden CO for the event.
